Following his Op-Ed piece in the New York Times, “The Myth of High Protein Diets,” Dr. Ornish joined the morning talk on CBS This Morning, where he further explained his position.

“You can lose weight on these high animal protein/Atkins-type diets, but you’re mortgaging your health in the process.”

“It’s not even low fat v. low carb,” Dr. Ornish explained to Gail King. “There are good carbs and bad carbs and good fats and bad fats. But the animal protein itself seems to make a big difference. The more animal protein, particularly red meat that you eat, the more likely you are to get sick from all kinds of different things.”

“And you’re saying there’s a difference between weight control and having a healthy heart, which is really what you specialize in?” she continued.

“It’s true,” he said.

“You can lose weight on these high animal protein/Atkins-type diets, but you’re mortgaging your health in the process. On a whole foods, plant-based diet, your arteries are clean. With a high-fat, moderate protein diet, they are partially clogged, and in a high fat, high protein, low carb diet, when you eat a lot of red meat, your arteries are more clogged. But it’s not necessarily reflected in your weight or cholesterol levels. These studies that look at low carb and low fat haven’t really looked at the arteries themselves, and when you do that, you find that you’re mortgaging your health. Eating a whole food, plant-based diet your arteries are clean.”
