On June 8th Dr. Ornish joined the Fox Business news team to discuss how lifestyle changes can prevent our most common chronic diseases. Due to rising healthcare costs, many families are now forced to forego medical care to save money, explains host Maria Bartiromo. A new report from Bankrate found that 1 in 4 families don’t seek medical care because of financial worries and growing insecurity around health care coverage.

“86% of the 3.2 trillion dollars we spent last year on healthcare was for chronic diseases that are preventable”

Bartiromo asks Dr. Ornish: What’s your solution for cutting the skyrocketing cost of healthcare?

Dr. Ornish answers:

All our research is based on the simple question: what’s the cause? It turns out that 86 percent of the 3.2 trillion dollars we spent last year on healthcare was for chronic diseases that are largely preventable and even reversible by changing diet and lifestyle.

These simple lifestyle changes — eating well, which includes a whole foods plant-based diet, exercising more, stressing less by using stress management techniques likes meditation and yoga, and loving more by increasing family and community ties – can reverse heart disease, diabetes, prostate cancer. It can even turn on your good genes and turn off your bad genes to extend your life.

Dr. Ornish explains how the Ornish Lifestyle Medicine program’s new partnership with the company Sharecare is creating a new paradigm of healthcare that heals hearts, transforms lives and will revolutionize the economics of healthcare by lowering costs.
