In this segment on Fox and Friends, Dr. Ornish discusses his recent study on telomeres and longevity, published in The Lancet. He and colleagues found that as the telomeres at the the end of our DNA gets shorter, so do our lives. Dr. Ornish explains that changing what we eat, and other lifestyle changes, can lengthen our telomeres, and therefore extend the number of years that we live.

What is a Telomere?

Dr. Ornish further explains:

Telomeres are the ends of our chromosomes, our DNA, and they control how long we live so they are pretty important. There’s an enzyme called telomerase that makes them longer, and what we found is that in only three months, simply by changing what we eat, how we respond to stress, how much exercise we get, and how much love and intimacy we have in our lives, the telomerase can increase by almost thirty percent, thus lengthening the telomeres. And it’s the first study showing that anything, even drugs, can do that. So we’re excited by our findings.
