My friend, Vicki (Aloha, Vic!) recently sent me an article about the need for us to be more polite to ourselves. How true! When we meet another person for the first time, we are usually on our best behavior—cordial, hospitable, complimentary, and accommodating. Think of the benefit we would gain if we applied that same behavior to ourselves. A dose of self-kindness and self-civility could provide a welcomed cool breeze of forgiveness and respite on a hot, high-stress day.

When we feel better, we do better— for ourselves, with others, and for others. It’s a win-win.

We can begin practicing being more civil to ourselves right now. We can take a minute to rub our own shoulders; make ourselves a tall glass of iced green tea; and compose a mental list of what we’ve done to support our well-being so far today (waking up and getting out of bed counts). Self-politeness can calm us and soften us.  The sooner that we learn this truth, the better it will be for our health. THIS IS NOT SELFISH! When we feel better, we do better— for ourselves, with others, and for others. It’s a win-win.

How did you show yourself kindness and civility today?
