It’s a Passion: It Helps You Spiritually, Mentally and Physically
by Rachel Lehmann-Haupt
Name: Linda
Health Challenge: High blood pressure, obesity and family history of heart disease.
Greatest Motivation: By the end of the program I did feel better all around. I lost 15-20 pounds. Once you get started, it becomes a habit. It’s a passion and it just helps you spiritually, mentally, physically, all around. I took it as a personal challenge and I’m pleased with myself that I was able to do it. I want to continue to do it for the rest of my life.
Her Story: My parents died quite young, at 70, which I consider quite young, and I’m not far from that. I want to live a little longer, and I feel this program is helping me quite a bit. I do feel better generally all over. My experience was a good one because the leaders, the coordinators, all the facilitators were great. The social support part was nice because if you don’t have social support elsewhere or support at home, it helps to have that.
“I took it as a personal challenge and I’m pleased with myself that I was able to do it.”
The nutrition aspect was probably the most important to me because I wanted to make sure that I eat the correct food to reverse heart disease and prevent inflammation caused by the wrong foods. The meditation part was excellent. I just got to lay back, relax, and chill out, as the kids say. It was just beneficial all around.
By the end of the program I did feel better all around. I lost 15-20 pounds. The exercise part of it was great because I love to do exercise, walking and biking and kayaking. The nutrition was wonderful too because I guess I always knew what I should be eating, but I didn’t do it, so the [program] help me there. I took it as a personal challenge and I’m pleased with myself that I was able to do it. I want to continue to do it for the rest of my life. If you stick to it, and it’s not really that hard to stick to it, it becomes a habit. It’s a passion and it just helps you spiritually, mentally, physically, all around.

Thank you for these success stories. One BIG question: how did they get to join “the program” that they speak of, and how do I get to join the same program?
I’m highly motivated, but need guidance very similar to Linda’s.
Thank you in advance for your response.
Joe

The Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease is the first integrative lifestyle program for reversing heart disease and other chronic conditions that Medicare is covering under the specially created category of ‘Intensive Cardiac Rehabilitation’. The Ornish network is growing rapidly, including national partnerships with many private insurers such as Highmark Inc, WellPoint and HMSA. Some of these private insurers are also reimbursing for patients who have risk factors for coronary heart disease, and other conditions such as diabetes and early prostate cancer. Rachel,
I’ve been reading the blog / web site / and newsletters regularly for a few months now and don’t really understand how to get into the program. I have blockage in the heart and have been put on statins, blood pressure med. and a baby aspirin. Yet i continue to have angina pains daily. Thank G-d not too badly with the pains because I have been able to manage getting to work each day and even exercising. However, I’ve also become a vegan and with diet and meds my cholesterol has gone way down to 66. I was at 177 pounds when i got the diagnosis of blockage etc. and now I’m about 162 pounds and have been a plant based vegan for the past 3 and 1/2 months. But the more I read from you guys i cannot figure out if you have a program, where it is, how much it costs, etc. Can you please fill me in???? Thanks.Je -
